Ok, so they won't likely strike it rich, but they can search for herkimer diamonds! What are Herkimer Diamonds? Herkimer Diamonds are beautiful double-terminated quartz crystals found in Herkimer, New York. Incredibly, these phenomenal gemstones are close to five hundred million years old. The crystals are magnificent works of nature, found in the rock, having a diamond-like geometrical shape. Thus, the name recognition of “Herkimer Diamonds”. Where can your unit mine for diamonds? There are two public mines just down the road from each other in Herkimer. The Ace of Diamonds Mine and Herkimer Diamond Mine. Each of these locations offer a place to dig for diamonds. David Madison Troop 167 visited the Ace of Diamonds mine during our April campout in 2012. The scouts did enjoy the mining after they started finding diamonds. We went on a long weekend trip where we visited the Ace Diamond Mine in Herkimer, Cooperstown and Howe Caverns.
