David Madison / Thursday, April 16, 2020 / Categories: Activities, Remote Scouting Shelter in Place Scavenger Hunt Open to all members of the BSA - From the Pee Dee Area Council Shared from the Pee Dee Area Council - Michael Hesbach | Scout Executive/CEO SHELTER-IN-PLACE Scavenger Hunt Challenge your Scout(s) to complete the 'Shelter-in-Place' Scavenger Hunt. This scanvenger hunt has challenges that are fun and can involve other family members. To earn the patch, a Scout must complete the set of requirements listed for his/her level of Scouting. Cub Scout Requirements Fun Items (Complete 15 out of 20) Earn the Protect Yourself Adventure Loop. Click here for instructions. Plant a flower or vegetable plant, either in a pot or in a garden. Play a game with your family. Charades is a great game for family night. Take a picture of all your toilet paper and post at https://www.facebook.com/PDACBSA Paint, color, draw or sculpt an art project. Sidewalk chalk anyone? Explain to your family the importance of good hygiene and sheltering in place. Do as many jumping jacks as you can and record your progress for a week. Have a family movie night. Use some of that yummy Scout popcorn or make ice cream sundaes. Tie Dye a Shirt or a pair of socks. How crazy can you get? Pick out and put together a puzzle. Make up a silly song and perform it for your family. The sillier the better. Earn the Yo-Yo Adventure Loop. Click here for instructions. Learn how to juggle. See how many balls you can juggle at the same time. Clean out your closet/drawers and donate to families in need. Clean up your room/playroom without being asked a million times. Eat breakfast every day. Make sure it’s a healthy one. Stay Hydrated!!! It’s easy to forget to drink water when you are busy. Perform a science experiment of your choice. Learn about an animal you would find in a zoo or aquarium. Visit a zoo or aquarium online. Some great websites would be: The Cincinnati Zoo (cincinnatizoo.org), The San Francisco Zoo (sfzoo.org), The National Zoo in Washington, DC or The Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. All have webcams set up and a schedule of feeding time for the animals. Required Items (Complete 10 out of 12) Lead prayer at meal or bedtime for a week or attend 3 church services online Make a healthy snack or meal for your family. Explain the benefits of washing your hands to prevent the spread of disease Take a 1-mile walk or hike. Identify 4 different kinds of birds or animals on your walk or hike. Dogs and Cats count. Help out your family. Do a chore around the house for 1 week. Find 1 food example from each of the food groups. Collect the Cub Scout Six Essentials or a basic survival kit for your hike. Check your rank requirements for the list. Recite the Scout Oath and Law every day for a week. Recite the Outdoor Code. Learn how to tie a Square Knot, Two Half Hitches, and the Bowline Knot. Earn 2 elective Belt Loops. Some of these items may fulfill some requirements. Take an hour each day with no electronics. Read a book, go outside, do something other than staring at a screen. Scout BSA Requirements Required Items (Complete 10 of the 12 Requirements) Say the Scout Oath and Law to your parents every day for 10 days Renew your Cyber-Chip online. Register for an online merit badge through Pee Dee Area Council. Complete 2 rank requirements at home for your next advancement. Review and demonstrate the “Hurry Cases” for First Aid. Learn and demonstrate the Square Knot, Two Half Hitches, Sheet Bend, Taut Line Hitch and Bowline Knot. Review the Emergency Prep merit badge. Make sure your personal and home first aid kits are stocked and up-to-date. Lead a family devotional. Remember those on the front-line during this pandemic. Earn the Interpreter Strip. Check it out on Scouting.org. Impress your friends by learning the basics of a new language! Prepare 1 healthy meal for your family. Recite the Scout Law and Oath every day for a week. Do your Good Turn Daily. Fun Items (Complete 15 of the 20) Take a 5 mile hike/walk with your family. Exercise to work off all those snacks! Earn at least 1 new Merit Badge. Explain the benefits of washing your hands to prevent the spread of disease Build a camping shelter in your backyard living room. Use what your learned from Mr. Larry’s pioneering classes. Or campout in your backyard or living room. Practice Leave No Trace by picking up litter on your walk. Make sure you are wearing gloves! Identify 2 constellations in the night sky. Identify 5 different kinds of trees in your neighborhood or while on your hike/walk. Do push-ups and sit ups daily. Record your progress for 1 week. Take a picture of all your toilet paper. Build a castle! Have a family game night. Board games, card games, video games, any type of game! Have a family movie night. Use up that yummy Scout popcorn. Visit a zoo or aquarium online. Some great websites would be: The Cincinnati Zoo (cincinnatizoo.org), The San Francisco Zoo (sfzoo.org), The National Zoo in Washington, DC (nationalzoo.si.edu) or The Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta (georgiaaquarium.org). Read a book, go outside, do something other than staring at a screen. Make a Rube Goldberg machine out of materials around your house. Show that it works. Learn to play a new game. Chess, checkers, Yahtzee, Pandemic, anyone? Interview an adult about a time in their life that was outside the normal. Did a grandparent live through the Great Depression or the Flu Epidemic of 1968 or the Asian Flu (1956-1958)?
