Horsing around

Day trip, Campout, Farm, Merit Badges: Horsemanship and Animal Science

Background

Heart to Heart Morgans, LLC is a small family owned breeding farm located between Buffalo and Rochester in Alexander, NY. We breed and train Morgan horses for their calm temperament and for show or pleasure. Foals are handled from birth to ensure well rounded horses. We also offer English and western riding lessons, training, pony rides and group activities.

Scouts and Scouters - (From their website)

Heart to Heart Morgans, LLC is dedicated to bringing educational and enriching content to scouting programs of all ages for both boys and girls. Many of our staff members are long-time scouts and scouters that have earned their respective organizations' highest awards, including the GSA Gold Awards. We employ instructors and leaders certified by the Girl Scouts of America, and BSA-certified merit badge councilors. An outline of our activites for scouts are below.

Groups and Fees

Daisey and Brownies:

The girls are welcome to come out to brush and ride the horses. There is no Try It for this, but each girl will receive a fun patch for the day's activities. Each session runs approximately 1.5 hours and costs $20 per rider.

Juniors:

The girls have the opportunity to learn to feed and care for horses on our farm as well as brush and ride. We have a classroom talk for the care and feeding as well as plenty of time to spend with the horses. Sessions run approximately 3 hours and includes a fun badge and costs $20 per rider.

Cadettes and Seniors:

Older girls will have the opportunity to learn both riding and classroom work. Sessions run approximately 4 hours and costs $25 per rider. And fun badges are included.

Boy Scouts:

The boys can earn the Horsemanship merit badge here on our farm. In our sessions (approximately 4 hours) we will cover the required riding and classroom work. Sessions costs $25 per rider.

Safety/Waivers

As part of our proactive safety initiative, all riders must wear appropriate apparel that includes long pants and boots. Helmets will be provided for use by the scouts. All participants in riding activities must present a valid, signed Release form prior to session start. A copy of this release form can be obtained here.

Is this something any troop/pack can do?

BSA Troop 1920: YES! In the summer months they are busy with horse shows. Some weekends they will not have people to teach the badges etc. Cubs could come for the day and ScoutsBSA can have a campout. It was honestly so nice. We camped in the backyard. We filled up our water jug from the house. Super nice firepit with a floodlight for cleaning up after the fire. The scouts helped with the feeding/cleaning/grooming etc. $35/scout for camping/merit badges/riding. $25 for the day of grooming/riding/merit badge. Adults who want to ride is $15 to cover their insurance. They do not charge for adults. Which is really nice. You email Amy. (she is wonderful) amy@hthmorgans.com. www.hthmorgans.com
